Talk With Your Wedding DJ About These Points

Hiring the right wedding DJ for your reception can truly keep the party moving. At the end of the night, you may even have guests approach you to say how much they enjoyed the party-like atmosphere that your DJ played a role in creating. Getting recommendations from recently married family members and friends is valuable as you begin your search for a wedding DJ, but you'll always want to sit down with each potential candidate and talk about what you want him or her to do. You should also consider talking about these points to make sure your night goes great.

Play the Right Music

Some couples might not make the effort to put together a list of the songs that they want their wedding DJ to play but then could be less than pleased about some of his or her choices. Music is truly subjective, which means that you should tell the DJ exactly what you want to hear, and even provide the order of the songs, to ensure that you're pleased. If you don't want to go through this work, you should at least tell the DJ which songs or genres of songs you don't want to hear. For example, if there will be lots of elderly people at your reception, you might wish to avoid modern dance music.

Speak Just a Bit

While some couples want their wedding DJ to crack jokes and keep the guests entertained between songs, this isn't always the case. You should be clear with the DJ you hire about how much you wish him or her to speak. Perhaps you want the DJ to introduce the first dance or other key dances, such as a group dance, but keep the other comments to a minimum. You don't want to risk being rude during the reception by approaching the DJ and asking him or her to stop talking, so reaching an agreement on an appropriate amount of banter in advance is in everyone's best interest.

Stay Sober

If you've been to lots of wedding receptions, there's a chance that you've encountered a wedding DJ who consumed a little too much alcohol that may have impacted his or her performance. If you're concerned about such an occurrence, you may request that the DJ abstain from alcohol consumption while on duty. This isn't an unreasonable request, and most wedding DJs will be perfectly understanding of this concept and may already have a rule about it themselves.
